How to Calculate Bricks for a Wall
The number of bricks needed depends on the wall area and the face size of each brick including its mortar joint. The basic formula for a single-wythe (one brick thick) wall is:
Bricks = Wall Area ÷ (Brick Face Area incl. mortar joint)
A standard modular brick measures 7⅝ × 2¼ inches face, and with a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint it covers approximately 0.148 sq ft. That works out to roughly 6.75 bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall.
Always add a waste allowance of at least 10% to cover cuts at corners, window and door openings, and any breakage during handling. For complex patterns like herringbone or diagonal layouts, increase the waste allowance to 15–20%.
