Work Out How Much Mulch You Need for Beds, Trees and Play Areas

The Interior Tailor Mulch Calculator estimates how much mulch you need for garden beds, tree rings, vegetable gardens and landscaping areas. Pick your mulch type, enter the length, width and depth, and get a volume estimate plus an approximate bag count. One-click depth presets for flower beds, tree rings, vegetable gardens, playgrounds and weed suppression make it easy to start with a sensible depth, and a waste allowance covers settling and uneven spreading.

What the Mulch Calculator Includes

  • Six mulch types: wood chip or bark, straw, compost or organic, rubber, cocoa hull and decorative gravel.
  • Metric or imperial: metres and centimetres, or feet and inches.
  • Quick-fill depths: flower beds, tree rings, vegetable gardens, playgrounds and weed suppression.
  • Waste allowance: a percentage for settling and uneven spreading.
  • Volume and bag count: the total to order, with an approximate number of bags.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Mulch volume is calculated from the area multiplied by the desired depth:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

A 10% waste allowance is included for settling and uneven spreading. Bulk mulch is typically sold by the cubic yard in the US; bagged mulch in 2 cu ft bags. One cubic yard covers approximately 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.

Recommended Mulch Depths by Application

  • Flower beds: 5–8 cm (2–3 in) — enough to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Tree rings: 8–10 cm (3–4 in) — keep 15 cm (6 in) clear of the trunk to prevent rot
  • Vegetable gardens: 5–10 cm (2–4 in) of straw or untreated wood chip
  • Paths & walkways: 8–10 cm (3–4 in) for cushioning and weed suppression
  • Playgrounds (safety): 15–30 cm (6–12 in) minimum for fall protection

Do not exceed 10 cm in flower beds — thick mulch can suffocate plant roots and harbour pests.

Mulch Types & Their Best Uses

  • Shredded hardwood bark: Decomposes slowly, attractive appearance, best for ornamental beds
  • Wood chips: Decomposes faster, improves soil, good for paths and around trees
  • Straw: Lightweight, inexpensive, ideal for vegetable gardens — decomposes quickly
  • Compost: Improves soil structure as it breaks down, best tilled in or used as a thin topdressing
  • Rubber mulch: Does not decompose, excellent for playgrounds, poor for plant beds
  • Gravel / stone: Permanent, excellent drainage, no weed-feeding nutrients

Mulching Projects You Can Plan

Use the calculator for most outdoor planting and surfacing jobs:

  • Flower beds and shrub borders
  • Tree rings and tree surrounds
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Paths and walkways
  • Playground safety surfacing

Example Mulch Estimates

Each example adds a 10% waste allowance and uses 2 cubic foot bags.

For a round bed or tree ring, work out the area (3.14 x radius x radius, minus the clear center) and enter an equivalent rectangle with the same area.

Tips for an Accurate Mulch Estimate

  • Choose depth by purpose: about 2 to 3 inches for flower beds, 3 to 4 inches for tree rings, and thicker for playground surfacing.
  • Keep mulch clear of trunks and stems, and avoid piling it deeper than about 10 cm (4 in) in flower beds.
  • Pick the material for the job: straw or untreated wood chip for vegetables, bark for ornamental beds, rubber for play areas.
  • Subtract the depth of mulch already in place if you are topping up an existing layer.
  • Above roughly one cubic yard, compare bulk delivery with bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of mulch do I need for a 10×10 garden bed?

A 10×10 ft bed at 3 inches deep requires (10 × 10 × 0.25) ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards, or about 14 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new?

If the existing layer is less than 3 inches, top it up. If it is compacted and matted, rake it loose or remove partially before adding fresh mulch to allow water penetration.

Does mulch attract termites?

Wood mulch does not attract termites but can provide moisture and cover they prefer. Keep mulch 15–30 cm (6–12 in) away from the foundation of your house as a precaution.

How deep should mulch be around a tree?

About 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm), kept about 6 inches (15 cm) clear of the trunk. Mulch piled against the trunk can trap moisture and cause rot.

Which mulch is best for a vegetable garden or a playground?

Straw or untreated wood chip works well for vegetable gardens. Rubber mulch does not decompose and suits playgrounds, but it is a poor choice for plant beds. Safety surfacing depth depends on the equipment, so check the manufacturer and local guidance.

Can I use the mulch calculator for a round bed?

The calculator takes length and width, so for a round bed work out the area first (3.14 x radius x radius) and enter an equivalent rectangle. Then pick your depth and waste allowance as usual.
