Know Exactly How Many Sod Rolls and Pallets You Need

The Interior Tailor Sod Calculator shows how many sod rolls or slabs you need for a new lawn, a repair or a landscaping project. Enter the length and width of the area and a waste allowance, and get a roll count, a pallet estimate and an indicative material cost. Because sod is perishable and must be laid soon after delivery, ordering the right amount the first time matters, and the waste setting helps you plan for cuts around edges, curves and obstacles.

What the Sod Calculator Includes

  • Simple area inputs: length and width in feet or metres.
  • Waste and offcuts setting: use about 5% for simple rectangles and 10 to 15% for irregular shapes or curves.
  • Roll count: based on a standard roll of about 9 sq ft (0.84 square metres).
  • Pallet estimate: see roughly how many pallets to order, with pallets typically holding 450 to 504 sq ft.
  • Indicative material cost: a quick budget figure for planning.

How Much Sod Do I Need?

Sod is sold by the square foot, square yard or pallet. A standard sod roll covers approximately 9 sq ft (0.84 m²). Most pallets hold 450–504 sq ft depending on the supplier. The formula is:

Rolls = (Area × Waste Factor) ÷ Coverage per Roll

Always add 5–10% waste for cuts around edges, curves and obstacles. Add an extra 5% for slopes, where sod is more difficult to lay without gaps.

Sod Installation Step-by-Step

  1. Remove existing grass and weeds — rent a sod cutter for large areas
  2. Till 4–6 inches of soil and incorporate topsoil or compost
  3. Level the area and ensure it slopes away from structures (1–2% grade)
  4. Lay sod in a brick-pattern stagger, starting along a straight edge
  5. Butt edges tightly — no gaps or overlaps
  6. Roll the sod with a lawn roller to ensure good soil contact
  7. Water immediately and daily for 2–3 weeks until roots establish
  8. Wait 2–3 weeks before mowing — check rooting by gently tugging

Sod vs Seeding: Which Is Right for You?

  • Sod advantages: Instant results, usable in 3–4 weeks, works on slopes where seed washes away, less weeding during establishment
  • Sod disadvantages: 5–10× the cost of seed, narrow species selection, heavy to install, perishable — must be laid within 24–48 hours of delivery
  • Seeding advantages: Much lower cost, wider grass species options, better long-term root depth
  • Seeding disadvantages: 6–8 weeks to establish, needs careful watering, bare soil prone to erosion and weed invasion during germination

Sod Projects You Can Plan

Use the calculator for:

  • New front and back lawns
  • Lawn renovation and replacement
  • Patch repairs
  • Slopes and banks
  • Play areas and borders

Example Sod Estimates

Each example uses a roll of about 9 sq ft and a pallet of 450 sq ft. Pallets are rounded to the nearest tenth.

Tips for Ordering the Right Amount of Sod

  • Measure the lawn in sections and subtract beds, patios and paths that will not be sodded.
  • Choose 5% waste for simple rectangles, 10 to 15% for curves, and add about 5% extra for slopes.
  • Time delivery for the day you will lay the sod. It is best laid within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Prepare the soil first. Use the Topsoil Calculator to plan any soil or compost you need to add.
  • Compare pallet quantities with your roll count, since pallet sizes vary by supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pallets of sod do I need for 1,000 sq ft?

At 450 sq ft per pallet with 10% waste, 1,000 sq ft requires approximately 2.4 pallets — order 3 pallets to have enough coverage and allow for cuts.

What is the best time of year to lay sod?

Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass) are best laid in early fall or spring. Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine) establish best in late spring through early summer when soil temperatures exceed 65°F.

How long before I can walk on new sod?

Limit foot traffic for the first 2–3 weeks. Once you cannot easily pull up a corner of sod (roots are anchoring it), light foot traffic is acceptable. Full use typically takes 4–6 weeks.

How many rolls of sod do I need per square foot?

A standard roll covers about 9 square feet, which is roughly 0.11 rolls per square foot. For 100 square feet, you need about 11 rolls before waste, or about 12 with 5% waste.

How much waste should I add for curves and slopes?

Add about 5% for simple rectangles and 10 to 15% for irregular shapes or curves. Slopes make sod harder to lay without gaps, so add roughly another 5%.

How soon must sod be laid after delivery?

Sod is perishable, so lay it within about 24 to 48 hours of delivery. Prepare the soil and schedule the installation before your order arrives.
